Centerfire Benchrest

Capital City Rifle & Pistol Club offers Centerfire Rifle matches sanctioned by the International Benchrest Association, Inc. We will hold 5 matches in 2010. Capital City R&P Club is one of the founding clubs of IBS. IBS in fact is a Maine corporation with its inception having been facilitated with the help of some of the founders of Capital City R&P Club. IBS roots are very deep here.

Our first shoot will have a Benchrest Beginners Clinic on Saturday and a 100 yard match the following day. There are three sanctioned IBS classes offered:

  1. Varmint For Score: any rifle which can weigh up to 13.5 Lbs with a max 3" wide forearm, unlimited scope power.
  2. Hunter Class: a repeating Bolt Action rifle with operational magazine weighing no more than 10 lbs and a forearm no wider than 2.25" maximum scope power of 6X and a case capable of holding 36g of water.
  3. Varmint Hunter: the same rifle dimensions as the Hunter rifle except any cartridge may be used.

All the rules can be downloaded here. Go to the Download tab and select Rule Book.

There is always a "Factory" class offered at evert match. Any commercially produced rifle is eligible to be shot as long as it complies with a few simple rules; the most important being, the bolt must be removable. Any scope, custom triggers, bedding, etc. The rifle must have a factory production barrel.

The Factory class shoots along with the other rifles but only competes with other factory rifles. In other words, you don't compete against the Pros.

The course of fire is a Warm up match and five targets for an aggregate score. A perfect score is 250 with 25 Xes.

We will also offer an AR class for 2010 as a trial to see if there is interest.
The rifle can be any caliber but must be capable of shooting semi-auto, a brass catcher must be used and the rifle must be able to load from a clip. A sign up sheet will be posted in the clubhouse. The class will only be offered if there are 5 or more shooters interested in participating. A complete set of rules is available here.

Match fees are $15 per yardage except for the two State Championship and those fees will be $20.00.

There are a few websites one can visit for more information on Benchrest
shooing. Www.Benchrest.com is the mecca of Benchrest information. There are a number of forums for various Benchrest disciplines and general gun talk. There is also a gunsmith forum which is very interesting. There is a list of vendors on the home page there where most of the folks either make things for or rifles themselves. Most of the Benchrest Sanctioning Bodies have links posted there as well.

Also www.bench-talk.com has forums plus a chat room which is active most evenings between 8:00 PM and whenever the last person is standing. There are participants from all over the world at various times visiting there. It's a very interesting place to hang out. Www.6MMBR.com is another great place to visit.

We hope many of you will come out and participate with us in one or all of our matches. We welcome new shooters and there are plenty of folks always willing to help and to teach. It is a great oopportunity to participate in a shooting sport with worldwide recognition.
