Cowboy Action

Cowboy Action Shooting is a multi-faceted shooting sport in which contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West: single action revolvers, pistol caliber lever action rifles, and old time shotguns.

The shooting competition is staged in a unique, characterized, "Old West" style. It is a timed sport in which shooters compete for prestige on a course of different shooting stages.

Most shoots at CCRP are six stage shoots. Approximate ammo requirements for a shoot are 75 rifle, 75 pistol and 35 shotgun. Required firearms are: Two single action revolvers, 1 pistol caliber, lever action rifle and a side by side or model 97 pump shotgun.

All ammo must be lead and sub 1000 fps.

The course of fire will vary from stage to stage and shoot to shoot. But a “typical” stage or scenario might be something like this:

Procedure: Begin at train door with both hands on train. At the beep draw first pistol and Nevada sweep 3 targets and holster. With second pistol Nevada sweep targets again and holster. Move to depot doorway and with rifle, double tap 5 targets. Exchange rifle for shotgun and take 4 shotgun knock downs.

Every year in April, CCRP hosts a clinic, An Introduction to Cowboy Action Shooting. We provide all the guns and ammo for the introduction for a nominal fee. This allows new shooters to try the game with our “hardware” before deciding on whether or not they want to participate.
